Urban Light Quality and Equity: A New Haven Lighting Walking Tour with Cait Toczko and Mark Loeffler

Thoughtfully designed and regularly maintained lighting has an outsized impact on the nature of our built environment. It can be a signifier of prosperity and an indicator of our under-resourced areas. Join local lighting designers Mark Loeffler and Cait Toczko for a walk through downtown New Haven to see a wide range of outdoor lighting and how it impacts the experiences of different communities in our city. We’ll consider both the qualitative and the equitable aspects of light, considering each through the frames of functionality, comfort, and aesthetics.

Refreshments and networking will be hosted at Olives & Oil from 5-7pm with Mark and Cait directing tours every 15-30 minutes starting around 5:15. The tour will involve about 30 minutes of walking over city sidewalks, with moderate incline. Parking validation available at the event for those parked in Temple Street Garage.

Using Light as Art in Landscapes at Night

Light brings us the opportunity to use and enjoy our outdoor space at night, even in Connecticut in the winter. Jan will show how she approaches projects inspired by the GE’s Chief of Illumination for the 1915 San Francisco 1915 Pan-Pacific Exposition. Lighting is a complicated design field as things are continually changing- plants grow, they bloom, some go dormant….and then we change light sources. That is all LED represents to landscape lighting, nothing in design has changed. Jan always presents a lot to think about.

About the speaker:

Janet Lennox Moyer, IALD, internationally known lighting designer has received many design awards, judged lighting competitions, been published extensively & taught all over the world since serving as teaching assistant for her undergraduate lighting course at MSU. Jan taught landscape lighting at UC Berkeley and Rutgers University in the Landscape Continuing Education departments during the 1980-1990s.

Ms. Moyer’s practice included interior, commercial/residential lighting. Her emphasis shifted to landscape lighting in 1983. Projects include landscape lighting of Levi Plaza, SF, the Detroit Civic Center, Pierce Transit, Tacoma, Washington incorporating a 200 foot long ‘Waterwall’; interior lighting at the Skywalker Ranch, a palace in Abu Dhabi; interior/landscape lighting at the Far Niente Winery, a resort in Safaga, Egypt; several areas of the Chicago Botanic Gardens & the Olbrich Botanical Gardens, Madison, Wisconsin, a Palm Arboretum and Conservatory in Northern California, Special residential properties across the nation.

Jan is the author of the internationally acclaimed The Landscape Lighting Book, originally published in 1992 by John Wiley and Sons, now in it’s 3rd edition with expanded information on documentation, garden evolution an extensive drawing appendix, and how the disruptive technology LED changes landscape lighting and how to plan for the future.

Jan’s new book The Art of Landscape Lighting, released April 8, 2022 with over 800 color photos/detail drawings explains Jans’ thinking/planning to respond to project needs and challenges covering her 45 years of design.

Expanding the hands-on landscape lighting course at The Lighting Research Center, in 2010 Jan then founded the International Landscape Lighting Institute, an educational 501(c)(3) Public Charity that holds 5-day, 5-night intensive courses. Each day includes morning lectures, afternoon workshop sessions, and evening mockups. ILLI teams have designed and installed five permanent landscape lighting exhibitions in the USA and Tokamachi, Japan.

With Michelle Mueller, Jan, recorded 20 instructional videos call Learn-Night Light available on-line through the IES website. Jan is committed to sharing her knowledge and striving to raise the bar for the landscape lighting industry.

True and False Circadian Lighting

Presented by Andrew Moore-Ede of Circadian Light

Many lighting products are incorrectly labelled "human-centric" or "circadian." This is because the word “circadian” has recently entered into lighting industry vernacular often with limited understanding of its precise meaning. This can create confusion for architects, lighting designers and specifiers.  In 2018 the IES and RPI's National Science Foundation funded LESA center workshop report concluded that  "Merely adjusting CCT, light intensity, or even SPD with time of day does not qualify a lighting system as 'circadian.' CCT color tuning products …should not be labelled 'circadian' unless they have been demonstrated through properly designed clinical trials to be capable of optimizing the phase, amplitude and/or entrainment of the circadian system to promote human health and wellbeing.” This course shows architects and specifiers how to distinguish between "true" and "fake" circadian lighting products, and how spectrally engineered light which removes blue at night and provides blue-rich light during the day offers a medical, evidence-based solution for lighting which optimizes  human alertness, mood, productivity and good health.
